Music Musical artists having their music given away free has a range of implications, so it was with a deep breath and heavy sigh when I was notified because I'm on her publicity mailing list that Shakira's new album is being given away free to people who download her iphone app.
But I still quite like Shakira (having been there since just on the cusp of Laundry Surface) but had entirely forgotten to buy the album. Now a mobile phone company has paid for a copy for me. Which is fine.
You can have a free copy too if you download the app and follow the instructions. They do ask you to fork over your email address and mobile number so I suppose it also depends on how squeemish you are about that sort of thing.
The track Empire has the lyric"And stars make love to the universe ..." if that helps. Rihanna's on one of the other tracks too.

"We spent New Year’s Eve at a hotel bar in Ho Chi Minh"
Geography Ellie Taylor spent New Year in Vietnam:
"We spent New Year’s Eve at a hotel bar in Ho Chi Minh observing local New Year’s customs by watching a ten piece latin band from Brazil do things with bongos whilst wearing Easyjet orange satin waistcoats. While us Brits welcome in the New Year with Auld Lang Zyne, it turns out the Vietnamese prefer a group sing a long to Shakira’s greatest recording accomplishment ‘Waka Waka’. Nothing makes you feel more immersed in South-East Asian culture than loudly yelling ‘This time for Africa!’ with a room full of Russian ex-pats as the clock strikes midnight."Shakira's latest epic featuring Rhianna is coincidentally doing the rounds. Like Waka Waka, it's one of her mainstream efforts though unlike Waka Waka, it's near impossible to sing along to in the traditional sense.
luxuriate
Music What I've always loved about Shakira (other than her music -- aaawooo etc) is that just when you think you've read the same interview over and over again (which generally boils down to the journalist describing how clever she is even though her lyrics are funny), there's always some new bit of information or quote that you have to read twice to make sure to read it correctly the first time. Witness this interview with The Guardian's Alexis Petridis Luxuriate in the warmth of:
"after touring the Oral Fixation album, she declined to start work on a follow-up, preferring instead to don a disguise and study history at UCLA. "It was such a long tour, I needed a break from me. The universe is so broad, I cannot be at the centre of it. So I decided to go to the university and study history for a summer course, just to kind of switch gears, taste the student life. I used to wear a cap and a big backpack, I looked like a boy. I didn't get recognised. Some people looked at me very suspiciously, a few people asked me, but I told them my name was Isabelle. I would go to university over and over again if I could."If someone submitted that story as a film proposal they'd be laughed out of the office because it sounds so unlikely. I'd love to see the faces of said students when they realise who they were trying to make friends with: "I knew there was something fishy about that chick..." they might say depending on how students in America talk these days.

- About thirty years worth, from 1974 through to 2002. The first episode: "Plumbers Ball" (from six months before I was born) is a bit of an oddity -- features all of The Goodies and has a very young sounding Barry Cryer in the chair (Humph apparently being ill that week)
- I didn't hate the 4th -- even the fridge scene. The quicksand was a mistake and the climax simply lacked awe. What it desperately needed was a reaction shot of Indy showing us what to feel, but for some reason Spielberg decided to concentrate on the thing with the whatsit which simply wasn't that impressive given that we've already seen thousands of them flying around in other doodahs.
- Doesn't Johnny Dee write for The Guardian these days?
- What a lazy poster and appearances from Aniston and Eckheart might not guarantee an audience. What's the plot then? If only it was Maggie Gyllenhaal and John (not in American Beauty at all) Cusack. That's a film writing itself. Then, I thought 'Must Love Dogs' was going to be good ...
- Oh yes, she is the she wolf.

Neil and Palma's Kilimanjaro Challenge
Neil Perryman, co-editor of Behind The Sofa and his friend Palma Carter are doing a charity climb up Mt Kilimanjaro to see the roof of the world in aid of UNICEF and they're looking for sponsors. You can make a donation here. Given the date, I think Neil's just looking for a way to avoid the next series of Torchwood.
Ada Lovelace Day.
Have you signed up yet? 24th March some of us bloggers will write about a woman in technology who is unsung. I think there's still time to pledge. I haven't decided who I'll be writing about, but I suspect selecting Suw herself would be missing the point, even though she deserves it.
Renée Fleming to sing at Obama's inauguration
And some other people, but still -- Renée Fleming! I just hope we get to see some of it, though I suspect the BBC coverage will be the likes of Justin Webb talking about the US economy whilst Shakira sings in the background.

And because I'm linking to it, the record company are sending $5 to an animal welfare charity. Just because I'm allergic to cats doesn't mean I can't help them out once in a while.
Catherine Zeta Jones is Cleopatra in Steven Soderbergh's 3D musical Cleo!
I don't think there's anything this man can't at least try to direct. Jones was about the only thing which made the film version of Chicago watchable. Secretly I hoped she would be the next Doctor Who, which seems terribly unlikely but consider her performances since High Fidelity. Not that (the royal) we could have afforded her.
Sarah Beeny is in my generation.
It hadn't occurred to me that Sarah Beeny was thirty-seven, just two and a bit years older than me. Which isn't to say I thought she was older, it's that I forget sometimes (as we've established) that I'm not in my twenties. It makes her more approachable somehow. Before this becomes too inappropriate, I should mention that this interview from last weekend's worth reading for the opening few paragraphs were the Guardianista forgets what she looks like...
Is it Little Boots?

Barack paraphrases an Alanis Morissette song. Probably not.
"Enough about me, lets talk about you for a minute / Enough about you, lets talk about life for a while / The conflicts, the craziness and the sound of pretenses / Falling all around... all around." I still can't quite believe that by next Tuesday evening, this man is going to be the US President. In this video, without pretension, he offers what amounts to an advert for the inauguration describing the various media outlets and websites that will be carrying the event, including a kids version on Disney with Michelle and Joe and then goes all Capraesque with suggestions on how people can help serve their country.
Amanda describes the plot of Star Wars from the tiny amount she’s seen.
Genius. And strangely close to Lucas's original synopsis.

That's horrifying if understandable. I'm yet to here reports of Shakespeare having been translated successfully, verbatim, into any other language and that includes Klingon.

Shakira endorses Obama.
Though the format was bizarre, last night's debate pretty much confirmed everything we already know -- that McCain doesn't know what to do any more. He's spent much of the campaign slagging off his own party, taking pot shots at the policies that he previously supported, and generally doing the Democrats's job for them, under the pretence of being a 'maverick', not really explaining how he can be a force for change when the 'fundamentals' of that party would still be in charge should he come to power. That means that even in the circumstances of a controlled debate he can't help seeming stale and desperate while Obama is cool and dynamic. McCain looked nervous; strolling around the stage like a school boy public speaker not sure where to put his hands. He's lucky that the format did restrict room for redirects and proper debate; in a proper verbal fight, Barack would demolish him.
She was the face of 70s Hollywood, alongside Nicholson, Beatty and McQueen. Just don't ask Faye Dunaway about Roman Polanski.
Xan Brooks of The Guardian gets on the wrong side of Dunaway. I love the moment when she says: "My God, I turned down the Mail to do this!" As though they wouldn't ask that question either.
The Page That Has A New Favourite Manager

The Guardian have a recording of it being read by a computer, which sounds like HAL 9000 hectoring Stephen Hawking, a Speak and Spell and the old Ananova animated news reader.

Life One the rare occasions when I do get a cold, it's never a bang, fuck you, and out. It's a slow process in which I can feel every symptom creeping in and taking up home. It probably accounts for why I've been so out of sorts this week leading to a rather lame showing on the blog. You'll forgive me, then, hopefully for presenting a few odd comments and links huddling together pretending to be something better. Back to full strength soon I hope.
Review 2007: Update: eight contributors so far and as with the last couple of years I'm trying to get one for every day in December. Details available here. Don't worry if you don't think you can write. I've been writing this for six and half years and it's never stopped me. Also if you're one of the eight, do please reply by the end of this month so that I can start posting thing from the first of the month.
Martha Rosler’s Library: "The library consists of nearly 7800 volumes all from Rosler’s collection, mostly in English, and includes catalogues, essays, documentation in subjects ranging from art, theory, women’s studies, science, politics, revolution, poetry and fiction."
Found in the referrer logs: The difference between Mozart and Shakira. Well, there's their ages for a start.
Ancient Marvels Abound at Vintage Computer Festival: "Topics at the Vintage Computer Festival ranged from a discussion of the RAMAC -- the first spinning disk drive -- to a brief history of "phone phreaking" to the role of the TRS-80 in the PC revolution."
I've updated the filmlog.
Are you malcoordinated or uncoordinated?
I've also attempted a review of last night's rather wonderful Doctor Who Team-Up. Warning, the sofa seems to be lost in a vortex at the moment so the link might not work.
Teen Accused of Stealing Virtual Goods: "The youth in the Netherlands was on one of those Web sites where you create virtual people to wander around virtual buildings spending what amounts to real money. You pay cash for credits to spend online. The 17-year-old allegedly stole $5,800 worth of imaginary furniture. Real police arrested him. They suspect other teens of receiving the stolen goods."
The BBC consolidates its disparate blogs onto one page with a single mega RSS feed.
Odds and Bodkins: Isabella Rossellini Awkwardness, Much More: "So there I am with Isabella and David. Me: HowdoyoudogoshImsohonoredtomeetyou. Isabella: What did you think of the movie? Me: You must be very proud. Isabella: That depends on what you thought of the movie."

The Soil Eaters
Music Madonna does a cover of the Holby City song. Simon sums up the final set of Live Earth:
So yes, I watched Live Earth although stuck with the interactive channels for most of the day, only joining the rest of the kingdom when it became apparent that they were beginning to repeat themselves and not including anything from Wembley. Shakira was excellent, as was, Toni Collette who can really rock out (did say that out loud?). The Pussycat Dolls had the Queen moment (I was checking ebay for the album even before the set ended) and although I didn't think Madonna was that bad she didn't do Ray of Light any favours.
On the whole though, the BBCs coverage seemed much fairer and balanced than Live Eight, presenting the promotional films whilst at the same time questioning whether the concerts will actually do any good. I was impressed though with the way they purposefully asked the question repeatedly about scientific consensus and repeatedly underlined that the disagreement isn't about whether the planet is heating up any more and whether it was down to everything we've been up to since the industrial revolution but rather the rate at which it's happening and how far into the future the tipping point is and when we're actually so fucked there's nothing much we or our kids can do about it (see I too, like Phil Collins, can swear).
About the only criticism I can give is how off message some of the performers were; it strikes me that given the occasion some of them could have been given a few more suggestions in relation to the information they needed to put across. The nadir was the usually brilliant KT Tunstall in New York who told the crowd and the people at home that they should unplug their mobile phones and eat soil (although she could have been a bit disgruntled after Kevin Bacon told the crowd the half-Irish Edinburgh born singer was from England). Its easy to understand that you can stop war by not fighting with one another (and perhaps follow Marvin Gaye's advice to Get It On) and you can beat hunger by feeding people. But global warming has thousands of related causes and thousands of related solutions which makes it really difficult to fit into a sound bite.
"It turns out it was surprisingly apt when the cast of Holby City chose to do Hung Up for their Children In Need slot last year - listening to Madonna doing her song tonight, it really did sound like the sort of song a junior doctor who played in a covers band for fun might put together for a medical revue. Something that people would hear and say "that's good... for a junior doctor."But leave Kate alone. I've woken up with her many a morning and I've not seen a reporter/presenter who can cover the Oscars and the war in Iraq with such equal intelligence and precision. Obviously I'm in love.

Will he watch? Won't he?
Music I couldn’t be less excited about watching LiveEarth tomorrow. As someone I spoke to earlier noted, it’s all the usual suspects, which is true to an extent (oh look -- Madonna -- yeah great -- perhaps she’ll swear again to the tea time audience because that just soo rock and roll), but other than that I’m deeply under whelmed by the line-up. Granted my literacy in relation to the popular music of the kids has taken a nosedive, but Duran Duran? Are you being ironic? Plus it’s being presented by Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross, because he obviously did such a great job last year assuming that his ego and humour making were more important than the music and the cause.
And isn’t a bit backwards that most of us, in watching this melody fest, will actually be contributing to the thing it’s trying to get the message out about? Wouldn’t it benefit the planet more if those of us who’ve already got the message played out in the rain instead or handed out leaflets to our neighbours to save them having to watch it? Is catching a set by Bloc Party really more important than stopping a polar bear from drowning? Perhaps I’m just in a misanthropic mood after this hellish week and I’ll be sitting down for Corinne Bailey Rae -- although probably not since her album contains exactly two good songs and screed of amateurish sappy ballads of the order that makes you long for the days of M People.
How come though that New York get KT Tunstall and the Smashing Pumpkins, Sydney has Toni Collette (who I really hope is the actress) & her band, Kyoto have Michael Nyman, Hamburg will be enjoying Shakira and Rothera Point will be rocking out to British Antarctic Survey’s Rothera Research Station house band, which has got to be a more exciting prospect than James bloody Blunt. Perhaps there’s more to be gained from surfing the interactive channels trying to chase these down, although if it's anything like Glastonbury, one of two channels afforded to freeview will be taken up by some DJ wittering on about what a great time everyone’s having, even though we’ve already realised there’s no substitute to actually being there.
Well, OK, I do have a soft spot for The Pussycat Dolls who are being introduced by David Tennant, and it’ll be fun to see Spinal Tap back in the saddle again, especially since they’re being introduced by Rob Reiner whose recent career missteps are entirely forgiven by that film, When Harry Met Sally, The Sure Thing, A Few Good Men and The Princess Bride (just about -- The Story of Us was shocking). All of this grumpiness is more than likely just an expression of my general resistance to new and good music of late. In my weakened condition and with Winamp on random, I’m in the middle of Daphne & Celeste’s Ooh Stick You and thinking it’s a work of genius. Perhaps I should lay off the Ibuprofen again.

The BBC are planning a history of British film for next year and are looking for people to contribute if they have a story about how a film from 'over here' changed their life.
Gia offers some pertinent opinions on the astronaut story: "They are trained to remain calm, clear-headed and emotionless when dealing with the technical side of their jobs… but what happens if they hate (or love) one of their colleagues?"
Because sometimes all you need are Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey having a good rant, sometimes at each other. Interesting from a narrative studies perspective because it doesn't have a traditional antagonist, but 2 protagonists.
Ultimately disappointing version of the musical,; every nugget such as Kathrn Grayson's rendition of "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" is matched by an irritant like Howard Keel's whole performance. Blands out the race issue as well.
Brilliant fun and certainly one of the best musicals I've seen so far, and even Howard Keel doesn't sink it. Doris Day's on blistering form and I don't think there a bad song in the piece, favourites being 'Secret Love' and "A Woman's Touch".
Less funny than it thinks it is. Although Jane Fonda is obviously a very intelligent comedian they apparently purposefully gave all the boys the jokes which unfocuses the flick. Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye's musical interludes are the best thing.
Very funny analysis of one of my favourite Shakira promos, 'Obsession'.
Despite having some truly astonishing production design and lovely performances from the kids, fails to completely engross due to Jim Carrey's mugging and repetitive story. On the whole feels like Jean-Pierre Jeunet-lite.
As you know I'm a big Gilliam fan but I found this wholly unwatchable. Obviously it might be a faithful rendering of the novel, but most of the scenes go on far too long and it just can't seem to decide what it wants to be about. Unsatisfying.
Primeval sheds viewers and it doesn't appear to be the seasonal downturn that often afflicts Doctor Who. I haven't watched the next episode yet, but it appears to feature the old standby of monsters in sewers under London. Ho, and indeed hum.
For the first time in years but doesn't look quite right in Firefox. But it is much faster to load on dial-up.
Shakira as 16-Foot Statue
Music "Singer Shakira will be honored with a 16-foot iron statue placed in her home city of Barranquilla, Colombia. The 5 ton statue was designed by German sculptor Dieter Patt. Reportedly, he was inspired to create the statue after meeting her when she was on a concert tour." -- Bill Lamb from About. Just when you think ...
"This might sound to you a bit odd." -- Shakira (Underneath Your Clothes)
Music "But this goes beyond what I had hoped, because it is unhinged in some kind of fundamental way. It is not an avant-garde record by any means, but there is something extremely avant about Shakira's voice. This strange instrument, made up of equal parts Cher and Alanis and Nancy Sinatra, is always veering offtrack and back on, bursting into weird filigrees at odd moments because she just can't stop the emotions flooding her gypsy soul. Or maybe it's just because she's insane. Either way, it's thrilling and gives even the softer stuff here, like "The Day and the Time", an edge that most pop singers can rarely achieve." -- Matt Chiluba of Pop Matters review Shakira's new Oral Fixation, Vol. 2. I'm very excited. I especially like the cover which pleasingly bonkers and reminds me of the photographs which used to turn up on the old Top of the Pops compilations, with added symbolism. See also Matt's review of Laundry Service.
Shopping and funking
Life Christmas shopping trip in Manchester today so that I can make the most of the season ticket I have for the train. Managed to buy some nice things at the continental market and around and about. Interestingly it didn't feel less special because I've been in the city for the past five days. Actually there was something quite liberating about leaving the train at the station and going the other way up Oxford Road for a change, even though I absentmindedly walked too far, subconsciously going in the direction of the place I used to work, and nearly missed the market entirely. I suppose there are some routines which never quite leave you.
Picked up Nikka Costa's 2005 album Can't Never Did Nothin' at Vinyl Exchange and it's every bit as good as her debut. It's brilliantly difficult to classify. Imagine Anastacia without the idiotic tendency to mimic the Diane Warren power ballads, crossed with the Shakira of the pre-English language albums with hints of anything produced by the Neptunes. And James Brown. Although the current track I'm listening to is pure Stina Nordenstam. Now I'm confused. Also finally found a copy of Shelby Lynne's Suit Yourself. I'll report back when I've heard the whole thing but in the opening few moments Lynne has a discussion with her band in the studio about what they can't get the song right and the title of track twelve is Track 12.

"There's an endless story..." -- Shakira
Music ""I look back at that time now, and I don't know how the heck I was able to put together an album in English and write my own songs in English, when my command of the language back then was very limited." -- Shakira on writing Laundery Service. Her latest English language album, Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 is due out late November.
Underneath.
Music After the underwhelming (read non-existent) release campaign for Shakira's new album over here, Rolling Stone reports: "Fijacion Oral Vol. 1, entered the charts at Number Four on June 15th -- the highest-ever debut for a Spanish-language album." I'm still working with the album myself -- I prefer her pre-Laundry Service work. But it's good to see the album selling in the US on its own merits and not dismissed from popular support because of the language it was recorded in.
Fijacion Oral (Vol. 1)
Music Anyone else notice that Shakira has a new album out? Just listening to it now and what a wierd beast it is with all the mix of French and Spanish lyrics and musicality which flies wildy between the Toyah of the Eighties and the Bibel Gilberto of this decade. More in the style of her earlier work -- can't imagine what people who bought this because they liked Laundary Service are making of it ... apparently Vol. 2 will turn up in November in the English language. I'd expect there to be a bigger publicity push behind that ...

[Alias, Angel and Doctor Who. It hadn't occured to me how obsessive I can be at times. The first two were courtesy of screenselect, but there really isn't any excuse for this much of the timelord. Shocking, especially when you consider all the good television that was no doubt being broadcast at the time (not that I'd know that for certain because I wasn't watching obviously). The only film I saw at the cinema for that whole entire month was Van Helsing which proves that my mind was on other things. Of the movies I saw on the small screen, I was one of the few people to like Neil LeBute's Possession and was strangely drawn to The Conversation and Catch 22 both studies of the introverted male. Funny.]

[That's better. I still think Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl is underated, but that the dvd is worth buying for the audio commentaries alome says something I suppose. There was a week's holiday in there which is why some days are really busy -- you can always tell when I had time off during the diary because the amount of things watched grows. I can pretty much recommend anything else on the list filmwise, although Unfaithful ends ludicrously and 11/09/01 - September 11 suffers some rough patches. Music I can't stop listening to the DVD version of Shakira - MTV Unplugged which was produced just before the release of Laundry Service and covers her pre-English Language career. She sings like an angel frankly and the passion is all there. It's a bit of a shock to begin with though seeing her with that long burgundy coloured hair ...
