TV Excellent article that investigates Doctor Who's employment of archetypical characters and stories which would potentially be a lot longer if the spin-off material were to be included: "The Doctor was a blend of the Heroic Archetype and Mentor Archetype (with a dash of The Professor), always trying to defeat the bad guys but normally by using by brains rather than brawn.
